FUNDAMENTALS OF CLOWNING with Julia VanderVeen MONDAYS

Monday, Mar 31, 2025 @ 7:00 PM EDT • Starting from $42.95 (includes fees)

There are infinite ways to be funny and if you're reading this, you probably know a few ways you have been funny in the past. Clown asks the performer to forget some of what they know intellectually and to discover the pleasure of finding how they are funny with an audience.

We will play games to get out of our heads and to remember the innate physical pleasure of play. We will focus on vocal and physical impulse, complicité or playing with other people, and using the flop as a beautiful tool for discovery.

Appropriate for seasoned clowns and newcomers alike. If you have been feeling stuck or plateaued in your current medium, this is a great opportunity to embrace the unknown and see how you can surprise yourself.

Only 12 seats available in this class.

You must have taken a previous DED clown class/workshop to signup for individual workshops.

Julia VanderVeen is an award-winning actor and clown, and a brand new Atlanta transplant from NYC!  She has trained extensively in Clown and Bouffon, and apprenticed under head of physical theatre at Yale University, Christopher Bayes. Julia has been creating clown material for the past ten years, and her first solo show, My Grandmother's Eyepatch, received rave ***** reviews last year at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and was featured in the NY Times.

Currently, Julia is developing a solo show called Dentata about female ferocity and pleasure, and an all female Buffon show entitled Stand Back and Stand By about the January 6th insurrection. She is very excited to be joining this community.
